The Wheel

The Wheel is a five page comic written by Neil Gaiman, with art by Chris Bachalo, lettering by Todd Klein, and colors by Rob Ro and Alex Bleyaert. In it, a boy climbs to the top of a ferris wheel in order to commit suicide so as to talk with God, but instead finds Destruction and Death convincing him to stay on the (metaphorical) wheel. Gaiman finished writing it in early November 2001 as a reaction to the events of September 11th. The art was finished by the end of the month. Gaiman and Bachalo chose an atypical format for the pages, mixing text without pictures for the boy's storytelling and standard comics panels for his interactions with the world. In his blog, Gaiman mentions that there wasn't space in a five page story to explain why Destruction was on the ferris wheel with Death despite having quit in Sandman.
