The consequences of Matthew Cable being on life support for the last three years are faced by his wife, Abigail Cable, in the real world and by his spirit in the dream world.

Sandman's origin owes much to Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, and so it makes sense that Sandman's first crossover would be in that series, now written by Rick Veitch. Released the same month as Sandman #3, dream sequences feature Matthew Cable dwelling in Eve's cave and eventually meeting the dream king himself. Dream urges him to let go of the ties to his mortal body, but also mentions "you are one who may yet go far." The actions in this issue leave open the path for Matthew to become a raven in Sandman.
