Second in command (to Roderick Burgess) of the Order of Ancient Mysteries. In November of 1930 Ruthven scarpers with many of the Order's treasures, £200,000, and Ethel Cripps, the magus's mistress. A month later, in order to protect himself from the magus's retribution, Ruthven trades Dream's helmet to Beelzebub for an amulet which is proof against the magus's magicks. In 1936 Ethel walks out on Ruthven, taking the amulet. The magus kills Ruthven.
