At one time, Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary were adapting the story as a screenplay for Alexandre Aja to direct for Paramount. In late October 2008, in an interview with MTV, Neil announced that David Fincher had replaced Aja as the director and that, due to the probably number of script drafts which Fincher would require, he and Avary were bowing out.

Neil blogged about the process several times, most notably here and here.

At a Question & Answer session after a reading at Temple University on 26 January 2006, several months before the project was announced, a fan asked Neil whether it was true that he and Avary would be adapting it. Neil was surprised that word had already gotten out. Here is a video of his reaction:
