The first edition of Stephen Weiner's Graphic Novels For Public Libraries book, later reissued as 101 Graphic Novels For Public Libraries, includes a foreword by Neil Gaiman and introductions by Craig Shaw Gardner and Elizabeth B. Thomsen. Stephen Weiner set out to introduce librarians to the concept of graphic novels and to help them chose titles for their local collections. His introduction includes a brief overview, including a time line, of the history of comics, how to catalog a comic, and how to protect a collection from theft. His 100 recommendations are split into 17 categories: Children's Adventure, Children's Humor, YA/Adult Adventure, YA/Adult Fantasy, YA/Adult Humor, YA/Adult Literature, YA/Adult Adaptations, Adult Literature, Non-Fiction, Newspaper Comic Strip Collections, Graphic Novels Already In The Library, Books About Comics, Collectibles, Commentaries, Encyclopedias, Handbooks, Histories, and Professional Literature. The book finishes with two interviews: one with Scott McCloud and one with James Vance, as well as an index of all titles referred to in the volume.
